ABC Ghosts!

Our final "Ghosts" preschool theme activity for the week was a hit. (Much like our Pop-out Ghost Card, and our easy to make Ghost Matching Game!) This was such a fun and easy Halloween activity for kids and is a great way to teach kids the Alphabet. Especially since LM(6) was home from school to enjoy this fun game with us!  It's a great way to add a little learning and fun to your Halloween this year. :)

Supplies:

• 4 sheets of white craft foam (mine are half-size sheets like these)
• Scissors
• Marker

Prep Work:

• You can draw lines (or just cut by eye) each sheet into 8 rectangles:

• Then, with each rectangle form it into a ghost shape by cutting the top to make it round, and bottom to make it zig-zagged, like this:

•  You can even stack a couple rectangles and cut 2 at a time!
• You'll have 32 rectangles, but you only need 26 ghosts for the alphabet. You can either cut them all into ghosts and use the extras for something else, or just leave the others as rectangles for something else later.

• Draw faces on the ghosts. Just 2 eyes and a smile. :)
• Then, write all the letters of the alphabet on each ghost. I decided to write them in lowercase to help LB(4) work on recognizing them.

Time to Play!
There are many ways you can use these cute little ABC ghosts. Here's what we did:

• I laid all the ghosts on the table face-down.
• LB(4) and LM(6) took turns:
• One of them would pick a ghost and say the letter and the sound the letter makes.
• The other one would then think of a word that starts with that letter. Then they'd switch.

The boys really loved this activity! It was great practice for LB(4) to recognize letters and their sounds. Thinking of words for him was a bit tougher. Sometimes he needed help, and sometimes he thought of some good words all on his own. It was a fun way to learn!

LM(6) also had fun. Eventually instead of just saying the word he thought of, he wanted to act it out and have us guess. This was a fun addition that I never even thought of! He came up with some great words that were tough for us to guess!

All in all, fun & learning was had by all. :)

Ghost Matching Game

Continuing on with our "Ghost" theme in our Preschool@Home, we made this easy little game!

LM(6) is home from school this week, so he actually helped me put it together and then we played it together as a family!

Supplies:

• 5 pieces of different patterns of scrapbook paper
• 3 pieces of white cardstock
• Scissors
• Black marker
• Glue

(P.S. Here is some super cute Halloween paper you could use for this game. Check it out!)

Prep Work:

• Lay all your pieces of scrapbook paper on top of each other, turn them over and draw a ghost shape on the back piece (my ghosts are about 4" tall and 3" wide, but they can be as big or small as you'd like!)
• Pick up all the papers and cut the shape--cutting out 5 ghosts at the same time!
• Then take one of the ghosts and trace that shape onto the back of the paper again, and pick the papers up and cut out 5 more ghost shapes all at once. Done!

• Using the black marker, draw 2 eyes and a smile on each of the ghosts.

• Next, cut the cardstock into rectangles big enough to glue your ghosts on. (I just cut a piece of cardstock into 4 equal parts. I did this to 3 cardstocks -- which gave me 12 pieces. Since you only need 10, I just put the 2 extras away.)
• Glue your ghosts onto the cardstock:

Time to Play!

• Lay all your ghosts face down.
• Take turns choosing 2 cards to see if you get a match.
• Whoever gets the most matches wins the game!

Noodle Ghost

Halloween is just around the corner, so we started our "Ghost" theme this week in our Preschool@Home!

LB(4) loved this fun craft, and I loved how easy it was!

Supplies:

• 1 piece black construction paper
• White crayon
• Glue
• Dry Noodles (any kind you have on hand)
• Googly eyes

Craft Time!

• Draw a GHOST shape on the black paper using the white crayon.
• Then help your child follow the white line with the glue so that the whole shape has glue on it.
• Put your noodles in a bowl. I found this strange noodle at the store called Radiatore. I thought it would be good for this craft because it's kind of squiggly like a ghost. :) Any noodle would look great!

• Give your child a bowl of the noddles and let them place them on the glue:

• Next, have your child glue on the 2 googly eyes (if you don't have googly eyes, you can just glue noodles on for eyes. Or draw eyes!)
• Then have them draw a smile with the white crayon and put glue on it, and noodles on the glue:

•  Let it all dry!

Easy Halloween Countdown

Here is a fun Halloween activity we did a couple years ago. In fact, It was so fun I might just go cut out some ghosts right now so we can count down again this year. Never too late to start! :)

LM(3) is VERY excited about Halloween. It all started when he saw me buy a little pumpkin costume for LB(1) the other day. Ever since then, he asks me several times a day, everyday, if tomorrow is Halloween. I have to keep telling him that it's still 4 weeks away. But not understanding how much time that really is, I thought it would be fun & helpful to do a countdown.

I cut out a bunch of little ghosts. Which was super easy:

• Fold a white piece of paper in half (the fat way), and cut that in half and half again so you basically have 4 long strips, folded in half:

Then cut each one in half using whatever kind of cut you want for the bottoms of your ghosts:

Round out the edges on top, draw on smiley faces, and you instantly have a gaggle of ghosts! I used sticky tack and placed them on our filing cabinet:

On the back of each ghost is written one of the following:

Craft

Music

Cooking

Learning Activity

Surprise!

LM will choose a ghost each day until Halloween and we will do a special activity. Some will be 5 minutes or less. Some will be longer depending on our time. And one of the surprise ghosts will of course be the Halloween activity of ALL Halloween activities: Trick of Treating!

You could also do this countdown without the activities. Just put up the ghosts on your wall or fridge, and have your child take one ghost down everyday until Halloween. Still totally fun for your kids and SO easy!!

And best of all, you can start this countdown WHENEVER you want to during the month of October! 

1 week before Halloween. 

2 weeks before Halloween.

3 weeks before Halloween.

4 weeks before Halloween.

Or anything in between. :)

Pop-out Ghost Halloween Card

I wanted to make some cards to send to Grandmas & Grandpas and came up with a fun idea to do an accordion-folded-pop-out-ghost-card. (Say THAT 10 times fast. haha) This turned out to be such a cute homemade halloween card, and a great Halloween craft for kids! And goes along well with some of our other Ghost themed activities, like our easy to make Ghost Matching Game, and our cute and educational ABC Ghosts. 

Here's how we did it (as shown above):

1. Cut out a wide ghost shape. Draw on eyes and smile.
2. Fold it accordion style. Then glue one side down on the inside of the card. Put glue on the other end of the ghost and fold the card. Wait for glue to dry.
3. Open card.....Boo!
4. Add words/message.

The one in the picture is one that I made to test out the idea. I had the boys make their own accordion-ghosts and they turned out really cute. A fun craft for old and young alike. :) You can use any type of paper for the card. Also, check out some cute Halloween scrapbook paper!

Banana Ghosts

I saw this cute idea over on No Time for Flash Cards.

Basically, you 

• cut bananas in half, 
• put in a popsicle stick,
• dip in melted white chocolate,
• place on wax paper,
• add eyes using jelly beans, m&ms, or chocolate chips

You can freeze them, or eat them as soon as the chocolate sets.

The boys thought it was so fun to make these, and they were quite yummy too!

Little Ghosts Song

Halloween Countdown #15 - Music

Here is a little song we made up today. It's super duper simple and LM has been singing it all day! We just used some of the ghosts we have taken off from the countdown. I started with just a few, but LM wanted to keep adding more. It was also a good opportunity to practice counting. After each ghost ran away, LM would count how many were left to sing the next round.

And the other ran away.

Halloween Countdown #9 - Craft

 I saw a similar idea to this over on allkidsnetwork.com, but added a fun twist by putting our family's pictures inside each window flap.

It is simply made with construction paper and glue. Just cut flaps for how ever many windows and doors you need to fit your family in a spooky Haunted House!

*note#1: Please excuse the fact that I am showing only my own photo in this picture. When I started this blog long ago, I decided to not post pictures of my kids faces, so all you get is my goofy mug!
