Pumpkin Puppets - Halloween Activity for Kids

Here is our last PUMPKIN themed activity from our preschool at home. Again, we used these fun little numbered pumpkins (which I made last year for a Treasure Hunt, and also just used for a fun counting activity with LB. click the pictures below to see those posts):

This time, I used the little pumpkins as puppets!

Prep work: Make the Pumpkin Puppets!

Cut out 5-10 (or more) small pumpkin shapes (with a stem) from orange construction paper.
With a black marker, draw faces on the pumpkins
With a green marker, color the stems.
With any color marker, write a number on each pumpkin.
Laminate them, or cover them with clear contact paper on front and back (that's what I did.)
Using tape or sticky tack, adhere a popsicle stick to the back of each pumpkin.

Here's what you do:

Set up your stage for the puppet show. (Get behind a couch, bed, blanket, anything at all!)
Hold up a pumpkin and making a funny voice have him introduce himself as whatever number pumpkin he is. Then have him invite your child to count with him up to that number. LB(3) really loved this activity, and it was great counting practice, and also good to help him work on some speech sounds we've been working on lately.
Then switch and let your child be the puppeteer. :)
Or you can just put on a silly puppet show however you wish!

Pumpkin Man Craft

LB(3) made this happy little Pumpkin Man during our "Pumpkin" - themed week. It was fun to see how proud of it he was! He couldn't wait to show LM when he got home from school!

Prep Work:

Have your child color any designs they want on a piece of orange construction paper (optional)
Then cut out the following:

1/2 the sheet - cut out a pumpkin shape
1/2 the sheet - cut out 2 fat strips (for the legs), 2 skinnier strips (for the arms), and 1 small strip (for the stripe on the hat)

Using 1 piece of black construction paper, cut out the following:

2 triangle eyes
1 triangle nose
1 mouth
2 circles for hands
2 ovals for feet
1 square for hat
1 long rectangle for the brim of the hat. :)

Here's what you do:

Lay out all the pieces of the pumpkin man, and let your child glue all the pieces on, helping when needed. You can even talk about the shapes as they put them on.
Hang it up and welcome your new Halloween friend to your home! :)

Pumpkin Counting Practice

For our "Pumpkin" preschool theme, we did a couple of activities with these numbered pumpkins that I made a couple years ago for a Pumpkin Treasure Hunt. The first activity we did this year, was a counting practice. (click the picture below for more details on the treasure hunt):

Prep work: Make the Pumpkins!

Here's what you do:

Lay out all the pumpkins and a small pile of dry beans.

Have your child choose 1 or 2 pumpkins and count out the number of beans to match the number on the pumpkin:

If you want, you could also use this to practice addition! Once they've counted out the beans for 2 pumpkins, have them add them together.

Paper Roll Pumpkin

Our theme for our "Preschool at Home" is PUMPKINS! While I get to posting the new activities we've done, here is one of our favorite Pumpkin-themed crafts from years' past!

For this craft, we used orange construction paper that we cut into small strips, then stapled them together to make circles. We glued them to a piece of cardstock in a the shape of a pumpkin and then put it in a frame! Easy peasy, pumpkin squeezy. :)

Paper Pumpkin - Halloween craft for Kids

Here is another of our favorite Halloween crafts from years past:

We made this craft at our Library Story Time. It turned out so cute!

Cut out a rectangle from orange paper to roll up & glue together -- to be the center of the pumpkin (or use a toilet paper roll).
Cut out strips of orange paper (less than 1" in width).
Cut out a green leaf, a green roll to be the stem, and a long skinny green strip to be a vine.
Glue one end of each strip to the inside of the toilet paper roll.
Then take the other ends of the orange strips, and glue them inside the other end of the roll.
Glue the green stem into the top of the roll.
Glue the leaf and vine onto the pumpkin, next to the stem.

Pin the Face on the Pumpkin

For a festive Family activity, we played Pin the Face on the Pumpkin!

I had a big piece of poster board that was orange on one side and black on the other. I drew a pumpkin shape on the poster and cut it out. Then I cut out the eyes, nose and mouth from the black side.

We used sticky tack to put it on the wall, and to pin the face pieces on.

One at a time we would be blind-folded and try to make the best pumpkin face we could!

The boys loved it!

Rice Krispie Pumpkins

I got this idea from the blog: Home Stories A to Z

When I saw it, I couldn't wait to try it out!

All you do is:

Make Rice Krispie Treats (Recipe here)
Before you add the Rice Krispies, add some yellow and red food coloring to make the marshmallow mixture orange.
Mix in the cereal.
Form into balls.
Place half a Tootsie Roll on top for the stem.
Pipe green frosting on for the leaves.

(While I was on the Rice Krispies website, they showed these same pumpkins with a surprise treat in the middle, like a small peanut butter cup or small candy bar. Yummy!!!)

Dry-Erase Pumpkin Face

I got this idea from No Time for Flash Cards

All you do is:

Cut out a pumpkin or 2 with orange paper.
Add a stem.
Laminate it, or put it in a sheet protector.
And draw different pumpkin faces on it with a dry-erase marker!

So easy and a lot of fun. It's also a good way to practice drawing shapes. You could even make a game of it where you roll a dice and draw that shape for the eyes, another for the nose, etc.

Halloween Cupcakes

For an easy and fun treat, we made some Halloween Cupcakes for some friends.

All you need to turn any cupcake into a Halloweeny cupcake is some of those candy punpkins (or candy corn), and some sprinkles. The cupcake liners were also kind of festive since they were black and white.

Easy & delicious.

Pumpkin Treasure Hunt

I made these pumpkins to use for a Treasure Hunt for the boys.

The pumpkins are made from construction paper. I used a green marker to color the stems, black marker for the faces, and blue marker for the numbers.

I used contact paper to "laminate" them and sticky-tack to place them on the walls throughout the house.

The boys started with #1 and searched for each pumpkin going all they way up to 8.

When they got to 8, I had a special surprise hidden for them! :)

The boys LOVED this activity. So we did it over and over--each taking turns to create the hunt and a place prize at the end (a book to read).

Copy-cat Pumpkin Faces

I used the foam pumpkin faces we made last week (this post) to let LM practice drawing shapes and copying something that he sees.

I cut out pumpkins with card stock and gave LM some markers. One by one, he looked at a foam pumpkin and copied it onto a white paper pumpkin---using the shapes he had put on for the eyes, nose, & mouth with the matching colors.

Foam Pumpkin Faces

LM made an assortment of Jack-o-Lantern faces by putting sticky foam shapes (from the craft store) onto big foam pumpkins (we found a package of these at the craft store. Or you could just buy orange foam and cut out your own).

Painted Jack-o-Lantern

Whenever we paint, LM simply LOVES to paint an entire piece of paper in one color, edge to edge, corner to corner. So one time he painted a paper completely orange.

When it was dry, I drew a pumpkin shape on it and had him cut it out.

Then I drew eyes, nose and a mouth on black construction paper and had him cut those out too.

He glued them on, added a stem, and here is his Jack-o-Lantern!

Halloween Countdown #18 - Learning Activity

LM had a friend over today, so we played a little game together for our Learning Activity. It was something we thought up on the fly. I cut out a pumpkin using construction paper, and wrote all the letters of the Alphabet on it. I cut out matching Alphabet stickers I had on hand and I had them fish for them.

I tied a clothespin to a big kitchen spoon with a piece of yarn for the "line," and one at a time they would throw the line over a blanket on our kitchen chairs and fish for a letter sticker. Then they would match the sticker to the letter on the pumpkin.

It was pretty easy, and the boys had a lot of fun!

Halloween Countdown #13 - Surprise!

Today's "surprise" activity was playing Hide & Seek with our little baby pumpkins. I started by hiding them in the living room and LM searched. Then we switched. It was a fun day!

Roll-up Pumpkins

Halloween Countdown #12 - Cooking

I can't remember where I got this idea from, but it is just so easy and fun it simply had to be done!
Here's how we did it:

Spread some cream cheese on a flour tortilla (or spread on anything you like!)
Roll it up
Cut it so you get small rolls as shown above
Use half of a toothpick and any kind of edible foilage for the stem (we used a few tiny celery leaves, you could use parsley.)
Enjoy!

*And make sure small kids know to take the toothpick out before they eat!

Pumpkin-Matching

Halloween Countdown #6 - Learning Activity

For our learning activity today, I made a very simple file folder Pumpkin-Matching game.

All I did was cut out 2 pumpkin shapes from various patterns of scrapbook paper and glued on green paper scraps on the top for stems. I then used double stick tape to stick one set of the pumpkins on the folder.

Halloween Stick Puzzles

Halloween Countdown #3 - Learning Activity

I saw this idea somewhere, long ago, in a land far away, most likely, and have been meaning to give it a go. It was the perfect activity for Halloween Countdown day #3. I laid out the Jumbo sized craft sticks and used crayons to draw a couple of Halloween pictures. LM has fun with these, but they are a bit challenging for him.

I also must admit, it was a bit tricky to make these because the sticks kept moving around! Maybe taping them underneath would have helped.....or something.

Halloween Countdown #2 - Music

Using some felt (I love felt), I stitched 5 little pumpkins onto the fingers of a glove (which I got on clearance last year). Seriously took no more than 10 minutes, and now we are singing the song, "5 Little Pumpkins" all the live long day!

Which song, I did not know before, but found some lovely renditions of on youtube.

Halloween Countdown #1 - Craft

LM had fun making this pumpkin face. We have a little plastic pumpkin that magically appeared in our house a little while ago, so LM used that to dip in the paint and smear the orangeness all over the paper. Then I cut it out in the shape of a pumpkin and LM put the face on!
