My boys (5 & 2) LOVED playing this fun ABC game--because the next best thing to feeding yourself is feeding an Alphabet Monster!
First, you'll need to make a set of ABC circles:
- Trace circles on construction paper using a small cup (mine are about 2 1/2" big)
- Cut them out
- Write all the Letters on the circles. (I made a set of Upper-case Letters, and a set of Lower-case Letters.)
Second, you'll need to create a Monster:
- Grab an empty cereal box, shoe-box, twinkie box, or anything cardboard (I used an empty oatmeal canister).
- Cut out a little opening for the mouth.
- Cover the box/canister with construction paper and write letters all over it.
- Decorate your monster with crazy eyes, nose, hair, etc.
- Lay all the letters out on the floor or table (we used just the upper-case letters when we played).
- Say a letter in a goofy monster voice and have your child search for it, then feed it to the monster by placing it in his mouth. Chomp!

This is an awesome idea. I am going to be doing a space theme soon and I think these could be used as aliens. Thanks for sharing. God Bless. Mrs. Valerie of Happy Days Preschool CA
I love the idea of feeding a monster! We included your post @ theclassroomcreative Summer Reading Activities. Hope you're enjoying your summer- Karen & Nicolette
This is such a great idea! I have made mine out of a Pringles can and my daughter loves to play with it!
You could also do this with letter sounds :)
I bet you could do this with sight words and high frequency words as they get older. What fun! Thanks so much for sharing. :)
You can do it with spelling. Spell cat spell dog.
Thanks for the great idea!! We used your idea and do the feed the critter!!! http://katescreativekitchen.blogspot.ca/2012/10/feed-me-sight-words.html
I used your monster activity with my two kids and it has become a favorite! I take it out during our morning circle time to review capital and lower case letters. They get so excited to feed the monster! Thanks for sharing your idea!

How did you get your monster's hair to look like that?
Hi Kristina.
The monster's hair is yarn. I wrapped blue and brown yarn around my hand, took it off and tied a piece of yarn around the middle, then cut the loops! :)
Made this today (for my 4 and 3 year old boys). Thanks for the awesome idea! It's especially fun when paired with the "My Monster Voice" Ipad app (currently $0.99). You can record your voice saying something like "Feed Me "H", Munch Munch Munch", and it changes it to a Monster voice. Big, BIG hit with my boys. Yay!
