Dr. Seuss Craft Ideas!

I love Dr. Seuss.
His stories are so clever and fun, and his sense of rhyme is impeccable.
Since his Birthday is coming up (March 2nd), I recently read several of his stories with my kids and then we did a craft to go along with them! Check it out!

Easy Dr. Seuss Craft!

Here is a fun and super easy Dr. Seuss craft you can create in honor of
Dr. Seuss' Birthday (March 2nd), or to go along with the book, "The Cat in the Hat"!
Check it out!

Supplies:

Craft Time!

  1. If you want, you can read the book, "The Cat in the Hat," by Dr. Seuss before or after you do your craft. :)

2. With a marker, draw a tall hat shape onto a piece of white paper:

3. Next, place several strips of the blue painters tape across the hat, like so:

4. Give your child a blob of red paint and a paintbrush and let them paint all over the paper:

5. Take the blue tape off of the paper, to reveal the white paper underneath making perfect stripes in the hat!
6. Cut out the hat with scissors:

**TIP: We waited for the paper to dry overnight before we took off the blue tape. I think the dried paint over the tape made it a bit harder to peel off and it thus ripped the paper a little bit. Not too big of a deal, but it might be good to try to take the carefully peel off before the paint dries completely. :)

One Fish, Two fish, Dr. Seuss Craft!

Here is another fun Dr. Seuss Book & Craft idea!
LB(4) and LL(2) were like fish in water and so enjoyed creating this simple and easy craft.
Check it out!

Supplies:

Book & Craft!

1. Read the book "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish," by Dr. Seuss.

2. Put the book away and squirt some blue paint onto a plate.
3. Give your child a paint brush and let them paint a piece of white paper however they want. This will be the water. :)

4. Let it dry (overnight is good).
5. Using the craft foam, cut out fish shapes to match the cover of the book: 1 white fish, 2 green fish, 1 red fish, 1 blue fish.

6. When the paint is all dry, cut the top of the paper to look like waves.
7. Glue the water painting onto another sheet of white paper.
8. Let your child glue the fish onto the water painting. And if they want they can draw faces on the fish. :)

 All done! Hooray!

*P.S. The best finger paints around are by Crayola. They are the perfect consistency. Not too runny and not too thick. And best of all they are completely washable--and so easy to wipe off tables, fingers, and wash out of clothes. I HIGHLY recommend them for painting crafts with kids.
And there is a great deal on Amazon right now to get a nice set of 6 different colors. In big bottles that you can use for a LONG time! Check it out!

Dr. Seuss Craft - Gertrude McFuzz

"Gertrude McFuzz" is another fun Dr. Seuss story with a great message!
This story is not in it's own book, but is found in the book, "Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories."

Check out this fun & simple craft to go along with the story of Gertrude and her feathers. :)

Supplies:

Prep Work:
1. On the piece of white cardstock, draw a bird shape in the lower left corner with a black marker. Here's how to draw a very simple bird shape:
  • Draw a semi-circle, but instead of closing it off on the left side, draw a circle instead. This is the bird's body and head.
  • Then add the beak, eye, and 2 legs. Done and done. :)

2. Cut out a bunch of small feather shapes from the green and blue papers. Mine are about 1.5" long.

All done! Ready for the fun.

Book & Craft Time!
  1. Read the story, "Gertrude McFuzz" to your child.

   2.  After you read the story get out all the craft supplies and help your child create Gertrude McFuzz and           her very feathery tail! Just glue all the feather shapes onto the bird's tail:

And here is our Gertrude McFuzz! LB(4) and LL(2) each took turns gluing on the feathers to create this beautiful masterpiece!

Have Fun!

Ten Apples Up On Top Craft (Dr. Seuss Book & Craft)

LB(4) and LL(2) had a lot of fun when we read this cute Dr. Seuss book for the first time.
It did take a while to get through the book since LB wanted to count the apples on every. single. page. :)
But hey. Good counting practice built right into a great book. Nicely done Dr. Seuss!
After we read we made a simple little craft to go along with the book. Check it out!

Supplies:

Prep Work:
  1. Using the craft foam, cut out the pieces to the tiger face:
    • 1 big orange cirlce (face)
    • 2 small half circles (ears)
    • 4 small triangles (stripes)
    • 1 small circle (nose)

2.  Using the red construction paper, cut out 10 apple shapes:

  • I folded the paper into 4ths and traced 3 apples shapes on top. Then I cut them out that way. :)

All done. Time for the fun!
----------------------------------------------------------------

Book & Craft!
  1. Sit down with your child and read the Dr. Seuss book, "Ten Apples Up on Top."

2. After you read, give your child the tiger pieces you cut out and have them put together the tiger face:

  • Glue the orange circle at the bottom of a piece of cardstock.
  • Then glue the ears on, the stripes on the side of the face, the eyes and nose on.
  • Draw a smile on with a marker

3. Glue the other piece of cardstock to the top of this one.
4. Then give your child the apples and have them glue them on as they count them up to 10.

All done!
LB & LL had fun working together to make this craft. They took turns putting the apples on  and were so proud to see their creation when finished!

Have Fun!

Horton Hatches the Egg Craft. (Dr. Seuss Book & Craft)

Horton Hatches the Egg is such a fun story by Dr. Seuss.
It's very cute and clever, and I especially love how it also teaches about the importance of keeping your word and being dependable. We recently read this book and then created our own "Horton's Egg" craft to go along with it! Here's how:

Supplies:

Prep Work:
  1. Cut an egg shape out of the red craft foam.
  2. Cut a few circles out of the white craft foam.
  3. Cut a REALLY long piece of yarn.

All done. Now you're ready to go!

Book & Craft!
  1. Read the book "Horton Hatches the Egg" with your child. (note: We actually read half of it, did the craft, then read the last half. This is a good option as the book is sometimes long for little ones to sit still all the way through.)  :)

2. Get all the pieces of the craft out and let your child craft Horton's Egg.
  • Squirt a bunch of glue out on the bottom half of the white cardstock
  • Place the wad of yarn on the glue. This is the nest!
  • Glue the white dots on the egg
  • Glue the egg on the cardstock, in the nest.

All done!
LB(4) and LL(2) had a lot of fun with this. They enjoyed the story and loved working together to create this craft.
Have fun!

(P.S. Here's an added bonus!
This craft also works well with another Dr. Seuss book: Scrambled Eggs Super!)
