Rainbow Song

To go along with our "Rainbow" theme for our Preschool @ Home, I decided it would be good to teach LB(3) the colors of the rainbow in order. I came up with a simple song which LB picked up very quickly and has been singing for the past few days!
Oh, and I purposely left out indigo and violet---just to keep it easy for my 3 year old. :)

Rainbow Song
To the tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"
(Note: the colors are sung slower, taking 2-3 beats each)

Rainbow, Rainbow in the sky,
I see you so very high.
Red, Orange, Yellow,
Green, Blue, Purple.
Rainbow, Rainbow in the sky,
I see you so very high.
:)

The asterisks below represent each beat of the song:

*      *       *     *      *   *     *
Rain-bow, Rain-bow in the sky,

I   see   you   so   ve-ry   high.

I   see   you   so   ve-ry   high.

Rainbow Race!

With St. Patrick's Day swiftly approaching, I decided to do a Rainbow theme for our Preschool @ Home this week. This first activity was INCREDIBLY simple to create, and was a HUGE hit with LB(3). He loves cars, but you could also play with anything else your child might like (little toy animals, buttons, etc.) Just prepare yourself to play this game over, and over, and over, and over.......... :)

Prep Work:
  • Get out pieces of construction paper in the following colors:
    • Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple
    • Then stack them on top of each other and draw a line down the length of it, 1 1/2" from the edge. Cut the papers so you have 6 strips of paper--each 1 1/2" thick.
  • Glue each strip of paper to another piece of construction paper (or the piece of cardboard at the end of the pad of construction paper---that's what I did).

  • Using a black marker, draw 3 lines on the paper, 2" apart.
  • Then go find 6 cars, one of each color of the rainbow.

How to Play!
  • Set everything up on the floor (so the cars won't roll as much).
  • Take turns with your child reaching into the bag and pulling out a colored square. Whatever color it is, that car moves up one space.

  • Keep going until one of the cars crosses the Finish Line (the edge of the paper), and wins!!

We had so much fun playing this. And it was a fun way to talk about colors too!

Valentine Puzzles

I know Valentine's Day is over, but here is something fun you can do with the Valentines your children received from their friends, OR with any Valentines you may find on clearance!

Pull out 3-5 valentines and simply cut each one into 4 pieces. Mix them up and have your child put them back together!

Painting with Toy Cars!

Originally posted:  February 26, 2011

We decided to use a few toy cars to help us paint.. Because of the different sizes and tread of the wheels, we got some pretty cool designs! All you need is:

  • White cardstock
  • Fingerpaints
  • Toy cars
Pour some paint on a plate. Have your kids roll the wheels of the cars and trucks in the paint, then roll them on some paper.

On your mark, get set, Paint!

Healthy Living: Drink more Water

I've been thinking a lot lately about the importance of living a more healthy lifestyle.
Drinking enough water is a crucial element of that and affects so many aspects of our health.
The other day, I found an AWESOME idea on this blog: Undressed Skeleton; an idea that is so simple and so helpful in remembering to drink enough water throughout the day!

I made mine a little bit differently, but the credit goes Undressed Skeleton for such a great idea. This is a helpful tool for adults, but also could be a fun way to help children drink enough water too!

Adults need  8 cups of fluids/ day.
Children need  5-8 cups of fluids/ day, depending on age.

Here's what you do:
  • For adults, get four 16oz clear, plastic water bottles (or some other combination of sizes to equal 64 total ounces--which is 8 cups).
  • With a permanent marker, draw a line around the water bottle in 8oz (1 cup) increments
  • Write times of the day above each line and on the bottom of each bottle showing at what time each cup of water needs to be drunk by.
    • For example: mine is marked every 2 hours. One cup of water every 2 hours isn't bad at all!

  • To make it easier to tell the order of the water bottles, write numbers 1-4 on the lids.
  • Place the water bottles in the fridge to keep them nice and cold. When you wake up in the morning get out the first one out and drink all the water in the allotted time. Then go get #2, then #3, etc.
  • At the end of the day, rinse/wash them, fill them back up and place them in the fridge.

I made the bottles shown above for myself and have been trying it out for the past few days. So far it's been VERY helpful for me! I think one of the best things about it is that it keeps me at a good level of hydration ALL throughout the day, instead of being dehydrated for half the day and then chugging a bunch of water when I'm really thirsty.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting an easy way to remind yourself to drink more water!
And if you do this for your kids, you could even have a sticker or little prize at the end of the day if they drink all their water. :)

Paper Heart Craft

Another fun Valentine's craft is this easy heart! It was fun way to use up some scrapbook paper, and LB(3) had a blast gluing all the strips on!

Prep Work:

Craft time!
  • Help your child glue all the strips of paper onto the white paper.
    • They can go straight up and down like we did, or they can put them in any direction they want!

  • Let the glue dry, then turn the paper over and draw a heart shape on the back.
  • Cut it out, or have your child cut it out.
  • You could have your child give this to someone as a valentine, or you could put it in a frame!

Valentine Pal: Craft for Kids

This is a very simple Valentine craft I prepared and LB(3) put together: our own little valentine pal!

Prep Work:
  • Get out a piece of pink and red construction paper.
  • Cut a big heart out of the pink (for the body), and 4 small hearts (for the hands & feet).
  • Cut out 4 small strips out of the red (for the arms & legs).

Craft it!

  • Give the pieces to your child and show them how to glue them on to make their own little valentine pal!
    • (I laid it all out and showed LB what the arms and legs were, and the hands and feet. Then I just handed him the glue and let him glue it all together.)
  • Then give them a marker and have them draw a face for their pal!

Valentine Number Game for Preschoolers

This was a super easy Valentine's activity that LB(3) loved! It was also a great way to get him more familiar with numbers. :)

Prep Work:
  • Cut a heart shape out of construction paper.
  • Draw 20 hearts on it and write the numbers 1-20 in them.
  • Get out a sheet of heart stickers (if you don't have stickers, get out crayons or markers for them to color the hearts with). :)

Here's what you do:
  • Say a number and have your child put a heart sticker on that number.
That's it! Simple, fun, and educational. Doesn't get much better than that. :)

  • You could do many variations of this same idea too:
    • Hide numbered hearts around the room. When they find one they can put a sticker on that number.
    • Have them put the stickers on the numbers in order, 1-20, by themselves.
    • If your child knows addition, give two numbers to add and have them put the sticker on the answer.

Heart Car: Valentine's Day Craft for Kids

We started a "Valentine's Day" theme and made this fun little craft. LB(3) loved it since he LOVES cars!

Prep Work:
  • Choose 3 pieces of scrapbook paper, in Valentine's Day colors (or construction paper).
  • Out of one, draw and cut out a shape of a car.
  • Fold the edges over on the other 2 papers and cut out a bunch of very small hearts.
  • Fold a piece of black paper and cut out 2 circles--for the wheels.

Craft time!
  • Sit down with your child and show them all the pieces you cut out.
  • Give them the glue and let them glue the car shape onto a piece of white cardstock.
  • Then let them glue the wheels on, and the hearts all over and/or around the car.

All done! You could use this as a Valentine's Day card for Grandparents or someone special,
or put it in a frame and hang it up as a new Valentine's Day decoration!
