The rest of the Halloween Countdown

So, things have been pretty busy lately, and we haven't really stayed on top of our countdown as we had planned. Oh well!

Here are the rest of the Halloween activities we have done lately. Enjoy!

At our Library Story Time, we made paper pumpkins using construction paper and glue.

My friend gave me a great idea to make candy corn cookies. You make sugar cookie dough, split it up into 3 bowls, put food coloring into each one to get the colors you want (leave the white color plain), roll the dough into thin strips of each color and cut into triangles.

We made spiders out of each of my boys' hand-prints.  We put eyes on with construction paper, and drew on a happy smile. We glued them onto cardstock and made Halloween cards for Grandparents!
For this craft, we used construction paper that we cut into small strips, then stapled them together to make circles. We glued them to a piece of cardstock in a pumpkin shape and then put it in a frame.

And treats are always a necessity when it comes to Halloween. We made chocolate cupcakes with Orange frosting. yummy.

Another fun craft was to make pumpkin faces with foam pumpkins, and a bunch of foam shapes. LM was able to just take the sticker backs right off the shapes and make faces all by himself!

Other Halloween activities we've done lately have been picking out pumpkins at a pumpkin farm, pumpkin carving, Halloween party, Trick or Treating, and tomorrow's treat will be Witches Hats made from round sugar cookies, frosting, and upside-down ice cream cones.

Happy Halloween!!!

Paper Roll Pumpkin

For this craft, we used construction paper that we cut into small strips, then stapled them together to make circles. We glued them to a piece of cardstock in a pumpkin shape and then put it in a frame.

Handprint Spider Cards

We made spiders out of each of my boys' hand-prints.  We put eyes on with construction paper, and drew on a happy smile. We glued them onto cardstock and made Halloween cards for Grandparents!

Candy Corn Cookies

My friend gave me a great idea to make candy corn cookies. You make sugar cookie dough, split it up into 3 bowls, put food coloring into each one to get the colors you want (leave the white color plain), roll the dough into thin strips of each color and lay them out next to each other. Then cut into triangles, and bake!

Paper Pumpkins

At our Library Story Time, we made paper pumpkins using construction paper and glue.
Just cut the orange paper into strips, and cut a larger one that you can roll for the center. Then glue the strips to the inside of the roll on the top and the bottom. Add green for the stem and leaf and all done!

ABC Pumpkin Match

Halloween Countdown #18 - Learning Activity

LM had a friend over today, so we played a little game together for our Learning Activity. It was something we thought up on the fly. I cut out a pumpkin using construction paper, and wrote all the letters of the Alphabet on it. I cut out matching Alphabet stickers I had on hand and I had them fish for them.

I tied a clothespin to a big kitchen spoon with a piece of yarn for the "line," and one at a time they would throw the line over a blanket on our kitchen chairs and fish for a letter sticker. Then they would match the sticker to the letter on the pumpkin.

It was pretty easy, and the boys had a lot of fun!

Mummy Dogs

Halloween Countdown #17 - Cooking

To make these fun and delicious Mummy Dogs, you simply wrap hot dogs in slices of crescent roll dough (from the cans of refrigerated crescent rolls), and bake at 375 for about 11 minutes. When they come out, put eyes on with dabs of mustard. Yummy.

First Word-Recognition Activity

Halloween Countdown #16 - Learning Activity

To practice some simple word-recognition, I used a cookie-cutter to trace and cut out some cat cards. I wrote down 5 common words (including LM and LB's names) and glued them on the cats. We had them face down on the table and one by one, LM would turn them over. We'd look at the letters and I'd help him sound them out. We have never done any kind of word recognition like this, so I thought it would be fun to see how he does. Plus, though he knows his letters pretty well, I know it is also important to help kids learn that letters have sounds to prepare them for reading in the future.

Little Ghosts Song

Halloween Countdown #15 - Music

Here is a little song we made up today. It's super duper simple and LM has been singing it all day! We just used some of the ghosts we have taken off from the countdown. I started with just a few, but LM wanted to keep adding more. It was also a good opportunity to practice counting. After each ghost ran away, LM would count how many were left to sing the next round.

3 little ghosts came out to play
1 said "Boo!"
And the other ran away.

(Then 2, Then 1)

Bean Skeleton

Halloween Countdown #14 - Craft

Today we made a Skeleton by using Beans for Bones! Just drew a skeleton on black paper and glued White beans on!

Pumpkin Hide & Seek

Halloween Countdown #13 - Surprise!

Today's "surprise" activity was playing Hide & Seek with our little baby pumpkins. I started by hiding them in the living room and LM searched. Then we switched.  It was a fun day!

Roll-up Pumpkins

Halloween Countdown #12 - Cooking

I can't remember where I got this idea from, but it is just so easy and fun it simply had to be done!
Here's how we did it:
  1. Spread some cream cheese on a flour tortilla (or spread on anything you like!)
  2. Roll it up
  3. Cut it so you get small rolls as shown above
  4. Use half of a toothpick and any kind of edible foilage for the stem (we used a few tiny celery leaves, you could use parsley.)
  5. Enjoy!
*And make sure small kids know to take the toothpick out before they eat!

Paper Scrap Candy-Corn

Halloween Countdown #11 - Craft

This craft was actually # 8, but I forgot to post about it, so #11 it is.

We had our cousins over for a sleep-over the other day, and after breakfast we did a little craft. We cut up different colors of construction paper into little scraps, and then glued them on to paper to make fun pictures. LM did a mulit-colored candy corn. Probably a bubble-gum flavored candy-corn of sorts. Some other festive pictures created that morning included a pumpkin and a bat.

Pumpernickel Bats

Halloween Countdown #10 - Cooking

I found this idea over on kitchendaily.com. Make grilled-cheese sandwiches using pumpernickel bread and bat cookie-cutters. The pumpernickel bread was fun to use, because it is so dark (like a bat), and plus pumpernickel just sounds Halloweeny, probably because of the "pump-" similar to the -kin variety.

But the beauty of it is you could make any kind of sandwich, with any kind of bread, and any festive cookie cutter!

I didn't know how LM would take to eating pumpernickel bread, but because it was shaped like a bat, he thoroughly enjoyed playing with it, and eating it. Now if only I could get shape brussel sprouts like a bat.......

Peek-a-Boo Haunted House

Halloween Countdown #9 - Craft

I saw a similar idea to this over on allkidsnetwork.com, but added a fun twist by putting our family's pictures inside each window flap.

It is simply made with construction paper and glue. Just cut flaps for how ever many windows and doors you need to fit your family in a spooky Haunted House!

*note#1: Please excuse the fact that I am showing only my own photo in this picture. When I started this blog long ago, I decided to not post pictures of my kids faces, so all you get is my goofy mug!

**note#2: The ghost is of no relation. haha.

Witch-o-Lantern

Halloween Countdown #8 - Craft

I love going shopping AFTER each holiday. You can find some really great, festive stuff for super-duper cheap-o-rama. Like this green paper lantern I found after Halloween last year at Michael's for like 30 cents or something. (I actually bought 2, so you might see yet another O-Lantern craft before the clock strikes 12 on ol' Hallows Eve.)

We used some construction paper to turn our lantern into a Witch-O-Lantern! Just cut out eyes, nose, mouth, hair, a hat and used double stick tape to stick them on. We hung her up with yarn, and she is now gazing upon us from the corner of our kitchen, wishing us an ever Jolly Halloween season.

Pumpkin Patch

Halloween Countdown #7 - Surprise!

Today was a very special surprise. We went to a Pumpkin Patch with some family and friends!

Pumpkin-Matching

Halloween Countdown #6 - Learning Activity

For our learning activity today, I made a very simple file folder Pumpkin-Matching game.

All I did was cut out 2 pumpkin shapes from various patterns of scrapbook paper and glued on green paper scraps on the top for stems. I then used double stick tape to stick one set of the pumpkins on the folder.

Spider Cookies

Countdown Activity #5 - Cooking

I am a huge fan of no-bake cookies. They are so gooey and chocolatey and delicious. I've been craving some for the past few days, and when LM chose a "cooking" ghost, I knew we had to make these. The only trick was to figure out how to make them Halloweeny.

To make them a bit more spooky, we decided to add some pretzel sticks in as legs and call them Spider Cookies! Here is a link to a good No-Bake recipe from All-Recipes.

Pick-a-baby-Pumpkin

Halloween Countdown #4 - Surprise!

Today for our special surprise, we chose 2 baby pumpkins from the grocery store. They were so cute AND on sale. LM picked one for him, and one for LB. To finish this activity, we will either draw on or carve faces  later in the month.

Halloween Stick Puzzles

Halloween Countdown #3 - Learning Activity

I saw this idea somewhere, long ago, in a land far away, most likely, and have been meaning to give it a go. It was the perfect activity for Halloween Countdown day #3. I laid out the Jumbo sized craft sticks and used crayons to draw a couple of Halloween pictures. LM has fun with these, but they are a bit challenging for him.

I also must admit, it was a bit tricky to make these because the sticks kept moving around! Maybe taping them underneath would have helped.....or something.

5 Little Pumpkins Puppet

 Halloween Countdown #2 - Music

Using some felt (I love felt), I stitched 5 little pumpkins onto the fingers of a glove (which I got on clearance last year). Seriously took no more than 10 minutes, and now we are singing the song, "5 Little Pumpkins" all the live long day!

Which song, I did not know before, but found some lovely renditions of on youtube.

Painted Pumpkin Face

Halloween Countdown #1 - Craft

LM had fun making this pumpkin face. We have a little plastic pumpkin that magically appeared in our house a little while ago, so LM used that to dip in the paint and smear the orangeness all over the paper. Then I cut it out in the shape of a pumpkin and LM put the face on!

Countdown to Halloween!

**Check out what we've done so far on our Countdown. Click here:

LM is VERY excited about Halloween. It all started when he saw me buy a little pumpkin costume for LB the other day. Ever since then, he asks me several times a day, everyday, if tomorrow is Halloween. I have to keep telling him that it's still a 4 weeks away. But not understanding how much time that really is, I thought it would be fun & helpful to do a countdown.

I cut out a bunch of little ghosts. Which was super easy. Just fold a piece of paper in half, and cut that in half and half again so you basically have 4 long strips, folded in half:

Then cut each one in half using whatever kind of cut you want for the bottoms of your ghosts:

Round out the edges on top, draw on some simple faces, and you instantly have a gaggle of ghosts! I used sticky tack and placed them on our filing cabinet:

On the back of each ghost is written one of the following:

Craft
Music
Cooking
Learning Activity
Surprise!

LM will choose a ghost each day until Halloween and we will do a special activity. Some will be 5 minutes or less. Some will be longer depending on our time. And one of the surprise ghosts will of course be the Halloween activity of ALL Halloween activities: Trick of Treating!

Happy Halloween!

Little Family Fun is Alive!

Welcome back to Little Family Fun!
I have been debating whether or not to continue with this blog, and after months and months of not posting as I strenuously deliberated (aka: laziness) I decided to start posting again!

You can thank Halloween for this. For you see, I am a sap when it comes to holidays. Especially with a Preschooler in my midst. There are just so many fun ways to celebrate holidays, and the anticipation of such led to my remarkable return to blog-land.

I certainly can't promise that I will post all the time. Especially once the holidays have passed.....But for whatever it's worth, I hope you find some fun ideas that you might like to try!

But before I begin again, there are a few things I want to say to all the Moms out there. So, check out the post below: Dear Fellow Mommy,
